From early 70s Volkswagen came out that the terminals of the alternator unprotected were present in the engine compartment which may result. unpleasant incidents Both the DF and D + terminal were provided with a protective rubber which also served as protection against moisture, which could corrode the terminals. Due to the heat of the engine to dry these rubbers after a period of time from hence this protective rubbers are no longer present in many alternators.
